Perhaps your most important requirement is a watch face with digits displayed that are clearly viewable at arm's length. One of the essential qualities in a running watch is that an individual can view your watch digits clearly whilst you are jogging.
Next you will need a way of recording individual recovery and repetition times when training over a predetermined distance such as two hundred meters. There are two basic means of logging times in sports watches: lap/split time logging over one session, and multi session logging.
Lap/split logging is helpful for recording time at important points along your run, for example lap times or mile marks. Most modern sports watches are able to track multiple laps every session, but less expensive watches may not have this capability.
If you are running a lot, then a watch with the ability to record session history and that allows you to easily navigate through sessions by date will be handy because it will enable you to keep a history of runs in memory that you can later copy to a training journal. Some watches also enable you to download data to Mac or PC so you can keep an electronic journal.
